8th Annual Friends @ CHARG Breakfast raises over $8,500 & new honorary council members inducted

Our new honorary council members, David Burgess & Diana Roca, pose with long-time employee and heart of CHARG, Margie Carlin.

During the 8th Annual Friends @ CHARG Breakfast on April 4 at St. John’s Cathedral, we inducted several new members to our Honorary Council:

  • David Burgess
A graduate of Oberlin College, David moved to Denver from New York City in 1973 to pursue a Masters Degree in Social Work. In 1981, he began work for what became the Denver Center for Mental Health Services, Inc., one of four community mental health centers serving Denver residents at that time. It was there that he began his major life commitment to serve adults living with major mental illnesses, as a social worker, Director of Community Development, and Team Leader of the Lighthouse program, a residential program for people who would otherwise have needed nursing home care.In 1989, David co-founded CHARG Resource Center together with a small group of professionals and mental health consumers, and in 1990 he assumed the position of Executive Director of CHARG, a job he held until his retirement in July of 2018—almost 30 years!David has taught courses at a number of local colleges and universities, including the University of Denver, Regis University, and Colorado State University.Awards and recognition have included the Heroes in the Fight Award from the Colorado Alliance on Mental Illness, the Master Scholar Award from the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work, and the William Funk Award for Building Community from the Colorado Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
  • Diana Roca
Diana Roca’s work in mental health began at St. Elizabeth’s Psychiatric Hospital in Washington, DC, where she worked while doing her year-long graduate practicum in Art Therapy.Throughout her professional life, Diana has combined her love of art, design and education. When love and good fortune brought her to Colorado, she worked as a Clinical Art Therapist for Jefferson County Mental Health Center’s Community Support Program and later for their Emergency Team. She coordinated the Neighborhood Arts Program for the Denver Art Museum and worked with the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs at their Civic Center Alive celebrations. During a 10-year sojourn in Spain, she developed an English arts program for children. Back in Denver, she worked as an Arts Infusion Specialist for Denver Public Schools and helped integrate art into core curriculum. At CHARG, she was the Administrative & Development Coordinator and infused the job with creativity. Among her accomplishments at CHARG, she is most proud of the Friends@ CHARG Honorary Council and is honored to join its ranks.
  • Victor Smith (posthumously)
A pillar of CHARG Resource Center, Victor was a long-time member of the consumer board, the consumer staff, and the Speakers Bureau. He was one of CHARG’s staunchest supporters. A memorial was held on July 13, 2017 at the Drop-In Center, with an overflow crowd in attendance. The Victor Smith Welcome Center at CHARG was dedicated in his name, and is housed at the Heartland Clinic’s great room, and encompasses the receptionist’s desk at which Victor (and Crackél) kept watch.

We also recognized our valuable volunteers, including our boards of directors. Without you, we couldn’t do what we do!

Thank you to those who attended and made a contribution to CHARG. You helped us raise more than $8,500!
