Friends @ CHARG Virtual Luncheon Raises Nearly $9,000 & Inducts New Honorary Council Member

CHARG Resource Center hosted its first virtual event on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic transitioned our annual Friends @ CHARG breakfast event to an online gathering over lunch time instead and we are so thankful to all of you who joined us!

If you weren’t able to attend, you can watch the program here.

Executive Director, Todd Helvig, PhD gave an overview and update of the CHARG community, and how we have adapted during this difficult year and what challenges we are still facing. We were honored to induct a new Honorary Council member, Susan Delaney Rodger, and hear from her a beautiful story about working with Victor Smith while on our board of directors and why CHARG is so special.

Susan with Victor Smith

Honorary Council Inductee
Susan Delaney Rodger received a BA in Sociology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. After a career in computer sales, she raised a family, and has two daughters. A dearth of resources for a family member with severe mental illness led Susan to advocacy in mental health. She began volunteering for and serving on boards of organizations which assist those people experiencing behavioral health challenges. Susan has served on the boards of Girl Scouts of NE Ohio and Coleman Professional Services, the social enterprise division of the Coleman Foundation, a behavioral health foundation devoted to helping people experiencing homelessness. She is currently on the Board of Directors at The Gathering Place, a daytime drop-in center for women, transgender individuals, and their children experiencing homelessness. Susan finds the performing arts and her flower garden life-enhancing, and looks forward to traveling again once the pandemic is over. Susan was on the Board of Directors at CHARG Resource Center from 2014-2019, and was instrumental in planning our 30th Anniversary Art Show Celebration last year.

Discussion of Behavioral Health Challenges and Opportunities related to COVID-19 Pandemic

We were also honored to have Laura Michaels, LPC, JD join us as a speaker for a portion of our program. From the beginning of her career, Laura Michaels has had a passion for mental health and wellness, first in the non-profit sector and now in the private practice of counseling. Laura has recently published a book, with co-author, Claire Zilber. Living in Limbo: Creating Structure and Peace When Someone You Love is Ill is now available on Amazon. Laura has been an active volunteer with CHARG for many years and is a member of the Honorary Council. She has a deep commitment to mental health treatment and the unwavering belief in its power to change lives.

We heard an interesting discussion with Laura and Todd, moderated by Megan Devenport, about how COVID-19 has impacted practice as a behavioral healthcare provider, what’s been the impact on client experience and/or effectiveness of services in general, what has been particularly challenging for individuals affected by chronic mental health conditions during this time of COVID-19 pandemic; and how CHARG’s community has been impacted specifically.

Raine’s Story

Participants also heard Raine’s powerful story in the video below. Raine started receiving treatment at CHARG’s Heartland Clinic in the last year and explains how CHARG has impacted her life before and during the global pandemic. Please take a few minutes to hear her incredible story of resiliency, individualized treatment, and hope.
